WHY? There are many other, much easier to learn, editors (nano). Vim/vi date back to the beginning days of Unix. Vim is an archaic editor with arcane commands and syntax. If you manage to learn it well, it can be powerful. But so can Emacs.

Why only learn “some of the basic functionality? If you are into self-abuse, you might as well try to learn it all. A little (partial) knowledge can be dangerous.
