I checked in Synaptic on my Ubuntu Mate and it does not have Cowsay installed by default but it is there if you want to install it. I had never heard of Fortune before so checked on that too, Fortune itself is not installed but fortune-mod and fortunes-min is installed so if you type fortune in the terminal it will give you a fortune. I know of your personal dislike of Ubuntu but Ubuntu Mate being a community driven OS doesn’t have some of the more egregious and intrusive features of regular Ubuntu and I use the same layout and wallpaper. I have used both Mint and Ubuntu Mate and from looking at my setup you couldn’t have told the difference as they are mostly under the hood stuff. I finally abandoned Mint over the forum, which the Ubuntu Mate one is a much better forum. I know you like PC Linux, but tried it and it was not for me, but the great thing about Linux is you get to choose.

You did the right thing. Anytime you add a new O/S (each Linux distro is considered a separate O/S) you have to create partition(s) to install it into.

I have a habit of removing any packages that were installed by default that I know I will not use. I use Synaptic as my software manger. Synaptic tells me exactly what programs it will remove and then waits for approval. Software Center does not do that. It just uninstalls whatever it has to. It’s TOO user friendly. Cowsay and Fortune are installed by default on Ubuntu and any derivative. Any time I try to uninstall them, Synaptic tells me that ‘ubuntu-minimal’ will also be uninstalled. Ubuntu-minimal is a vital system program. Maybe I should try the Software Center?

Every once in a while I will check out other distros to see how they are coming along, but at the end of the day, I’m back to Linux Mint. I still have a couple of gaming PCs running Windows 10, but when support ends in October, I will be switching them over to Linux Mint as well. I do have one gaming PC running Linux Mint. Steam works perfectly and for my Epic Games, I installed Heroic Games launcher and that plays my Epic games, so Linux Mint does everything I need it to.

I needed to create a partition on my boot drive for LM as I did not want to wipe out the windows partition. I think. I was not sure if the installation would overwrite windows or not. Did you partition?

You go to the Software Center, search for whatever, and install or remove, DONE. I searched for, installed, and removed cowsay just for fun in under a minute. I didn’t have any installed language packs, so I dunno why you would have them anyhow, but they get uninstalled the same way. You can also remove apps with the terminal, which if you know the name takes ten precious seconds off the process.

Mint has tutorials and helps like many other distros, so it helps to read that stuff.

Installing new software is easy but have you ever tried to REMOVE any software that is installed by default during the initial install? For example Cowsay and Fortune? Or any of the 200+ language packs? Even if you are a polyglot, you wouldn’t need more than 5 or 7.

I suppose you’re right, mint is like Windows. What you see is what you get and what you get you will use, whether you want to or not.
