X and Bluesky Launch TikTok Style Video Feeds

With TikTok’s future still uncertain, it’s the perfect time for competing social networks to fill the gap. Bluesky and X both announced vertical video feeds to mimic TikTok, giving users a reason to stick with them instead.

TikTok Users Rejoice, but Still Want Alternatives

The last year has been nothing but ups and downs for TikTok users. Even when the TikTok ban went into effect, it only lasted around 12 hours. Yet, it could go back into effect within 90 days if TikTok isn’t sold, at least in part, to a US company. So, users are still enjoying their favorite video sharing platform while seeking out alternatives in case the worst happens.

If you’re a social network wanting to increase your user base or keep loyal users on your platform longer, now’s the time to act. X and Bluesky are doing just that by creating their own versions of TikTok within their respective platforms.

X Announces New Dedicated Video Tab

Both made announcements via posts on their platforms. The official X account stated “an immersive new home for videos is rolling out to users in the US today.”

There wasn’t much detail outside of showcasing a sample of how it works. And, many users don’t have access yet. It appears to only be available on iOS for US users only. So far, no Android users are reporting having the video feed button in their X apps and it’s not showing up on desktop either. Of course, non-US users are rightfully annoyed that it’s not launching anywhere else just yet.

Bluesky Gets Vertical Video Feed Too

Video still isn’t huge over at X alternative Bluesky, but that isn’t stopping the smaller social network from making video a priority. I recently covered the Flashes app, which helps filter videos from the rest of your Bluesky feed. It’s not available just yet, but the official video feed is up. And, users can also create their own dedicated video feeds for others to follow.

Unlike X, there isn’t a dedicated button to access the feed. Instead, you’ll have to either search for the feed or go directly to the feed here. Tap any video to go full screen. Bluesky details the latest feature more in their official post.

Of course, Bluesky still has a lot of work to do in terms of video. Users want editing tools and the ability to save posts. They also want to be able to upload longer videos. So far, it seems like Bluesky listens to users, so those features could be coming in future updates.

Even with X and Bluesky adding vertical video feeds, will it be enough to make users switch from TikTok? Probably not. It could increase engagement on both platforms, but unless TikTok is banned or the biggest creators move, users are still going to stick with TikTok.
