What is “Hall Effect”?

Hall Effect is a phenomenon that occurs in physics, named after the person who discovered it, Edwin Hall. A simplified explanation is that Hall determined that a magnetic field could be used to change the direction of an electric current travelling along a wire. This movement creates a small but measurable change in voltage. This change in the voltage could then be measured by Hall Effect sensors.

Hall Effect joysticks use the aforementioned Hall Effect sensors to detect movement. Without getting too technical, attached to the inside of the joystick is a magnet. Hall Effect sensors are positioned around the joystick. When you move the joystick, it moves the magnet. The movement of the magnet creates a change in voltage that is detected by the Hall Effect sensors. This change in voltage relates to positional data, which is then delivered to the console, allowing you to control characters, navigate menus, etc.

Humidity, dust, dirt and other debris can also interfere with a joystick’s operation. Even dirty hands can introduce particulates that can register inaccurate readings. All of this can result in the controller registering movement even when the user is not actively manipulating the joystick, aka stick drift. Hall Effect joysticks are not impacted by these factors, which means they are significantly less likely to develop the problem, even over long periods of use.

Furthermore, due to the higher cost associated with manufacturing, controllers with Hall Effect joysticks are not as readily available as those without. As a result, consumers may find it difficult to source one.
