After a Long Wait, the Nintendo Switch 2 Is Finally Coming Soon

Nintendo Switch console with two games.

After over a year of rumors, Nintendo finally gave us a teaser trailer showing what the new Nintendo Switch 2 will look like. Do I wish the trailer gave some more concrete details? Yes. But, it’s enough for gamers to get even more excited.

Nintendo Switch 2 Coming in 2025

While most of us Nintendo Switch fans were hoping for a 2024 release, Nintendo kept mentioning a new version was coming, but wouldn’t commit to a date. Of course, no date is mentioned in the teaser trailer, but it does say it’s coming in 2025. My guess is an actual date will be released around April as the trailer and Nintendo Direct both advertise a special stream coming on April 2, 2025 with more details.

If you’re eager to get your hands on the latest console right now, registration for the Nintendo Switch 2 Experience in New York, Dallas, and Los Angeles begins today, January 17, 2025. Register for a chance to win tickets. It’s a completely random drawing and only open to US residents. However, you must have a free Nintendo account to enter.

What We Know So Far

As I said, details are still scarce, but the Nintendo Switch 2 teaser trailer has me extremely excited about several new features, including:

  • Noticeably larger screen – While it’ll still be the handheld we all fell in love with, maybe we can finally see some of the finer details on all our favorite Mario, Zelda, and Animal Crossing games.
  • Redesigned Joy Con controllers – They look larger, which would nice and make them easier to hold on to. They click in on the sides (no sliding into place) and release easily with a lever on the back
  • An improved kickstand – I liked the original, but this one looks so much better and offers far more angles.
  • Backward compatibility – My biggest fear was the Nintendo Switch 2 wouldn’t support Nintendo Switch games. But, Nintendo stated in the release that the newest console will support most physical and digital Switch games. Of course, exclusive Nintendo Switch 2 games will also be available.
  • TV dock – Naturally, the newest version also comes with a TV dock to help you easily “switch” between handheld and big screen.

What to Do While You Wait

I know waiting isn’t easy, especially with the next major announcement not scheduled until April. My suggestion is to keep an eye out for teasers on Nintendo Direct and just keep giving your original Switch a workout. Play some of the top games, master the best Mario games, or check out some Switch apps.
