What we don’t like

  • Would be too heavy and large for a keychain
  • A bit of a learning curve

It’s great to have a little pocket flashlight on us at all times via our smartphones, but sometimes that just doesn’t cut it – the smartphone flashlight function just doesn’t provide enough light. But even more than the brightness, the WUBEN X3 EDC Keychain Flashlight can save your life. It will light up your life more than your phone’s flashlight and can provide safety features that your phone’s flashlight never could. Learn more in this review.

WUBEN Keychain Flashlight Features

The WUBEN Keychain Flashlight is a very small handheld flashlight. It does double duty as a life-saving device as well, with a strobe light and SOS function and a brightness that your smartphone could never reach.

The flashlight has several functions that operate with a series of clicks and holds of the “Switch.” With just the one button, you can achieve:

  • Low light – 1 lumen, lasting for 50 hours
  • Medium light – 50 lumens, lasting for 6 hours
  • High light – 150 lumens, lasting for 2 hours
  • Turbo light – 700 lumens, lasting for 1.5 hours
  • Strobe light – 700 lumens
  • SOS light – 200 lumens
  • Red low light – 1 lumen, lasting for 30 hours
  • Red high light – 80 lumens, lasting for 2 hours
  • Blue indicator light

Just like most wireless earbuds, the WUBEN Keychain Flashlight has its own charging case to increase the life of the battery. The charging case can be recharged through a USB-C connection in two hours. The flashlight can be wirelessly charged as well

The WUBEN Can Save Your Life

Where the WUBEN Keychain Flashlight shines is … its shining light. The low light is just that: low. In fact, it’s a lower light than the flashlight function on my iPhone. However, the medium, high, and turbo lights are all much stronger than my phone’s flashlight. If I were to be lost somewhere in the dark, I’d want the WUBEN with me, rather than just my phone.

Additionally, the WUBEN has the strobe light at 700 lumen to add some attention to your plight. But even more so, it has the SOS function. The light is at 200 lumen, higher than the 150 of the high light, but much lower than the 700 lumen of the turbo, and spells out the universal Morse code of S-O-S repeatedly. Between the brightness of the light and the strobe and SOS functions, it would certainly help someone see and/or find you.

The red light could save you as well, as it would definitely stand out, though there is no flashing of a strobe or SOS signal with the red light. I’m not altogether sure what the purpose is of the blue indicator light. Additionally, there is a warning in the user guide that the blue light shouldn’t be left on, as it will quickly run down the battery.

Wuben Keychain Flashlight Charging Case Closed

Throughout my testing of the WUBEN Keychain Flashlight, as I didn’t have it on for multiple hours at a time, and when I was through, I stored it in the charging case, so the battery in the flashlight never ran out. Additionally, it shipped to me with 80% battery, so it could be used right out of the box. It also shipped with a lanyard, and user guide.

The lanyard is an interesting piece. For one, it doesn’t attach to the light itself and only attaches to the charging case. That makes it really bulky and heavy, and I wouldn’t ever consider putting it on my keychain. However, that lanyard is also a charging cord. Release the strap from the plastic piece, and you’ll find that each end is a USB-C. It’s utility all the way around.

Safety with a Learning Curve

As mentioned above, there are several light patterns and strengths in red and white lights on the WUBEN Keychain Flashlight. Yet, there is just one button to change from one pattern, color, or strength. This makes it difficult to remember how to get to the function you want. It’s a bit of a learning curve, and when it’s something you’re depending on for survival, you don’t want a learning curve.

I had to keep referring back to the small user manual. To fit in the box, it had to be really small, which made it too small for me to read. I had to snap pictures of each page and view them with my phone to read how to set it up, change the lights, etc. I had to brush up on this knowledge every time I used it. Eventually, it would become rote, which is good. But you’ll want to have it memorized before relying on it for safety.

Next to the one button, there is a tiny, tiny screen that shows the battery usage and the strength of the lumen. The battery level indicator is helpful, as you don’t want to depend on this to keep you safe if it’s going to be dying soon. The head with the screen and button rotates from looking straight ahead to looking straight up, to be flexible.

I’ve Seen the Light

For me, though, I find the learning curve of the WUBEN Keychain Flashlight to be worth it – safety is worth it. It would be a great addition to any camping trip, as well other outdoor activities, such as hiking, fishing, etc. It would be great to keep it in the car as well, to make sure you have it should you get stranded. It would also be very useful around the house, for the times your electricity goes out, and you’re sitting in the dark, or when you’re trying to find that one box you know you stored in the attic or basement.

It would never be less than helpful, and there’s always the chance it could provide you with safety. In all those situations above and move, it would be much more helpful than the flashlight function on your phone
